How to Shade: A Practical Guide to Pencil Shading

Shading is not filling in the grey bits. It is a record of where light lands on a form and where it does not, and if that record is accurate the object looks solid even when your outline is wobbly. Get it wrong and the most carefully traced contour still reads as a sticker stuck to the page.

The rest of this is mechanics: what light does to a form, how to build a range of values you can control, which mark-making techniques are worth your time, and how to shade the shapes everything else is made of. Read it with a pencil in your hand.

One light source. Always, at first.

Put a single lamp off to one side and slightly above your object, and turn everything else off. Shading is a system of relationships, and two light sources give you two overlapping systems that partly cancel each other out. Under a ceiling light plus a window plus a screen, an apple has three soft half-shadows and no structure at all. Under one lamp it has a light side, a dark side, a hard little shadow underneath, and a place where the two sides meet. That meeting place carries most of the information in the drawing, and you want it obvious while you are still learning to see it.

The anatomy of light on a form

Put an egg or a ping-pong ball under that lamp and look at it for a minute before you draw anything. Six things are happening, and they happen on every rounded object you will ever draw.

Why the core shadow is darker than you expect

It gets neither direct light nor much bounce, so it is darker than the shadow around it. Beginners flatten this and shade the whole shadow side as one even grey, which turns a sphere into a circle with a grey half. Deepen the core shadow band, leave a lighter strip of reflected light below it, keep the halftones ahead of it soft, and the form inflates off the page. One warning: reflected light is still shadow, and should never be lighter than the darkest halftone on the lit side. Overstate it and the object looks like frosted glass.

Why cast shadows have edges that change

A cast shadow is not an even blob. It is darkest and hardest where the object touches the surface, then softens and lightens as it travels away, because real light sources have physical size: at the contact point almost nothing gets through, further along the edge is only partly blocked. That contact point is often the darkest value in the drawing, darker than the core shadow, and it is what glues an object to a table. If your drawings float, this is why.

Value, and why beginners live in the middle greys

Value is how light or dark a tone is, independent of what it is a tone of. Nearly every weak pencil drawing has the same fault: everything sits between about 30 and 60 per cent grey. No true white, no true black, and the whole thing looks foggy. Two causes. Drawing lightly feels safe, so timid pressure gets baked in early. And most beginners have never made their pencil's darkest possible mark, so they do not know the range they are working with. You cannot budget a range you have never measured.

The ten-minute value scale

  1. Draw a strip of five boxes, each about three centimetres square. Then draw the same strip again underneath.
  2. Leave box 1 as untouched paper. That is your white.
  3. Fill box 5 with the darkest tone your pencil can make. Not one heavy pass: build it in three or four layers, changing stroke direction each time, until it is as dark and even as you can get it. That is the limit of your range.
  4. Fill box 3 halfway between the two, judged by eye and checked by squinting, then split the remaining gaps with boxes 2 and 4. Five distinct, even steps, no visible stroke marks.
  5. On the second strip, do it again with a different technique (hatching if you blended, blending if you hatched) and see which gave cleaner steps.

Two things usually surface. Your dark is lighter than you thought, and your steps bunch up at the light end, because five shades of pale grey are easy and five distinct dark ones are not. If your pencil cannot physically get there, a softer grade is the fix: a 2B or 4B goes dark where an HB only burnishes and shines. More on grades in pencil vs pen vs ink.

Ways of putting tone on the paper

Hatching

Parallel strokes side by side, with value set by spacing (closer lines read darker) and pressure. Fast, clean, and hard to ruin because nothing gets smeared. The sensible default. The usual failure is timid, feathery strokes: make each line one confident movement from the elbow and lift at the end.

Cross-hatching

A second layer laid at an angle across the first, then a third if you need it darker. This is how you build deep values without pressing hard, which matters more than beginners realise. Cross at roughly 30 to 60 degrees. A clean 90 produces a grid that reads as a screen door rather than as tone.

Contour hatching

Strokes that follow the surface: curving around a coffee mug the way a rubber band would sit on it, wrapping over the top of a sphere. Done lightly it describes volume before you have placed a single value correctly, which makes it a useful crutch while you learn to feel form. Done heavily the object looks bandaged.

Circulism

Tiny overlapping circles applied as a continuous scribble, building tone in fine layers. Smooth, grainless gradients, popular for skin and photorealistic work. Also slow, and it demands consistent pressure, so one lapse of concentration leaves a visible clump. Worth learning eventually, not in your first month, when what you need is many drawings rather than one immaculate one.

Blending and stumps

A blending stump (a tight roll of paper with a point) pushes graphite already on the paper into the tooth, smoothing a gradient. Used after the values are correct, on transitions that should be soft, it is excellent. Used as a way of making tone it fails, because a stump can only move what is already there. Blend a thin layer and you get a thin, dirty grey.

The paper matters more than the pencil

Tooth is the microscopic texture of the sheet, and it decides how much graphite the paper can hold before it stops taking any more. Copier paper is nearly smooth: it fills up after two layers and then goes shiny, and no amount of pressing gets you a proper dark. A sheet with some tooth (cartridge paper, or anything sold as drawing paper around 150gsm) will take four or five layers before it saturates, which is what lets you build a dark slowly instead of gouging it in. If your darks keep coming out grey and glossy, change the paper before you buy another pencil.

Shade a sphere, then a cylinder, then a cube

Nearly every object is one of these three, or several stuck together. A pinecone is a sphere with texture all over it. A teapot is a sphere with a cylinder for a spout and a bent tube for a handle. A camera is boxes.

The sphere

Light it from the upper left, at about 45 degrees. Draw the circle lightly, then find the terminator, the boundary where the surface turns away from the lamp. It is a curve, an ellipse bending around the form, never straight and never through the centre. Beginners put it dead down the middle and get a crescent moon on a flat disc.

Lay in the whole shadow side first, as one flat mid-tone shape. Then deepen the core shadow along the terminator, let a lighter strip of reflected light rise near the lower right contour, and work the halftones on the lit side, going lighter as the surface turns towards the lamp. Leave the highlight as bare paper. Cast shadow last, down and to the right, a foreshortened oval, sharpest where the ball meets the table. Every transition on a good sphere is soft except two: the highlight edge and that contact shadow. Practise on a tennis ball or a lemon.

The cylinder

A cylinder is simpler than a sphere in one specific way: its value changes around the circumference only, not along its length. Light, halftone, core shadow and reflected light run as vertical stripes down the side of a standing mug, unchanged from top to bottom, which makes it the best object for practising a controlled gradient. Hatch vertically and vary only pressure and spacing as you move around the form, keeping the core shadow parallel to the side. The rim ellipse faces the lamp at a different angle, so it takes a different value, and the inside of an open cylinder is nearly always darker than anything outside it. A candle, a teacup and a glass bottle are the same problem at three levels of difficulty.

The cube

Cubes have no gradients to speak of. They have planes, and each plane takes its own flat value, because every point on it sits at the same angle to the light. Three are usually visible: the top, lightest because it faces up towards the brightest part of the room; the plane facing the lamp; and the plane turned away, darkest. Never blend across a corner. A plane change is an abrupt value change, and softening it turns a solid box into a pillow. Within a plane you can carry a very subtle gradient, but the edge between planes stays crisp. This is the shading behind a notebook, a camera, and every building you will ever draw, which is why it pairs well with perspective practice.

Five mistakes that cost beginners the most

  1. Outlining, then filling in. Outlines do not exist in the world; objects are bounded by a change in value. Draw a hard contour first and it stays visible in the finished drawing, and everything reads as flat and cut out. Start with the shadow shape and let the boundary emerge where dark meets light.
  2. Uniform pressure. One grip, one pressure, one grey for the whole drawing. Hold the pencil overhand, shaft across your palm, when shading broad areas: it stops you digging in and gives a wider mark from the side of the lead.
  3. Muddy midtones. Caused by working the same patch over and over, over-blending, or stacking layers in one stroke direction. Mud is what happens when you fiddle with an area instead of deciding what value it should be. Decide, put it down in two or three passes, move on.
  4. Pressing too hard, too early. Heavy pressure crushes graphite into the tooth of the paper and burnishes it to a shine. After that the paper accepts no more graphite, so you can never go darker there, and the mark is close to unerasable. Your darkest value should arrive on the fourth pass, not the first.
  5. Ignoring the cast shadow's shape. A cast shadow is a projection of the object, distorted by the surface it lands on, and a drawing in its own right. Beginners put a generic oval smudge near the base of everything. Look at the real silhouette: a mug handle throws a shadow with a hole in it.

How to practise without it becoming a project

What you are training is a judgement (is this patch darker or lighter than that one) and judgement fatigues quickly, so shading rewards short, frequent sessions. A focused fifteen minutes on one small object under one lamp beats two hours wandering around a complicated still life. Two exercises are worth repeating until they are boring: a session where nothing matters except the value structure, and a session where you draw only the shadow shapes and leave the lit side as blank paper. The second is uncomfortable and it is the one that changes how you see, because it forces you to treat a shadow as a shape with edges rather than an area you tint in afterwards. Once a week, overshoot on purpose. Push the darks past what feels safe, then look at the finished drawing and decide whether it went too far. It usually has not.

Once shading feels reliable, work on edges: which transitions are hard, which are soft, and whether that matches the surface in front of you. Glass, wool and chrome differ from one another almost entirely in edge quality, which is the doorway into texture. If your objects are coming out the wrong shape before you get anywhere near the shading, construction is the thing to fix first.
