Perspective Drawing for Beginners

Put a book flat on the table in front of you and look at it. You know it is a rectangle: four right angles, opposite sides equal, no argument. The shape arriving at your eye is not a rectangle. The far edge is shorter than the near edge, the corners are not square, and if you traced the book onto a pane of glass held up between you and it, you would get a lopsided trapezium. Perspective is the set of rules that describes that distortion.

The subject gets taught as geometry, and the geometry puts people off before they have drawn anything. Underneath the diagrams it is a description of appearances: things shrink as they recede, parallel edges appear to converge, circles seen at an angle become ellipses. See those effects, draw them honestly, and you have most of what perspective gives you. The construction lines exist for the days when your eye lies to you.

The horizon line is your eye level

The horizon line is not the place where the ground meets the sky. It is the height of your own eyes, extended sideways forever. Outdoors on flat ground the two coincide, which is why the name stuck. Indoors the horizon line still exists. It cuts across your kitchen wall at whatever height you happen to be holding your head.

Test it now. Hold a pencil horizontally in front of your face, level, at eye height. Everything the pencil covers is at your eye level. Everything above it shows you its underside, everything below it shows you its top. That is the whole rule, and it explains why you can see into a mug standing on the table and not into one on a high shelf.

Move your eye level and every shape in the scene changes. Stand up and the tabletop opens out into a wide plane. Crouch until your chin is on the table and the same tabletop collapses to a sliver, the mug becomes a tall rectangle with a barely-there curve at the rim, and objects start overlapping instead of sitting apart. Nothing on the table moved. Choosing your eye level is the first decision in any drawing, and most people make it by accident.

What a vanishing point is

Take any set of lines that are parallel in the real world: the two edges of a road, the top and bottom of a row of windows, the horizontal edges running away from you along a table. In your drawing they converge, and they converge to one point. That is the vanishing point for that set of lines. Swing the object round forty degrees and its edges get a new vanishing point somewhere else. A street of houses set at odd angles has a vanishing point for every house.

One consequence does most of the practical work. If a set of lines is horizontal in the world, its vanishing point sits on the horizon line, which is to say at your eye level. Lines that rise or fall, a staircase or a sloping roof, vanish above or below the horizon instead. Lines running parallel to the picture plane, such as the verticals of a building when you are looking straight ahead, do not converge at all.

One point, two point, three point

These sound like difficulty levels. They describe where you happen to be standing.

Nearly all sketching from life is two point with at least one vanishing point off the paper, out in the hallway. That is why grid tutorials feel unlike your actual desk: they squeeze both points onto the page so the diagram fits, which produces the bulging, wide-angle look you have seen in bad drawings of houses. Draw a simple house and notice how gentle the real convergence is.

Where beginner boxes go wrong

The box is the workhorse of construction drawing. Get one to sit convincingly on a table and a suitcase, a camera and a chest of drawers all follow from it. Beginner boxes almost all fail in the same way. The front face is drawn as a rectangle. The depth edges are added going back at about forty-five degrees, parallel to one another, all the same length. The back face is a copy of the front face, shifted. What you get is a box drawn by someone who has heard a description of a box.

Receding edges converge. The far face is smaller than the near face, always, including the vertical edges of a long object. The correction takes two seconds of thought and it is the difference between a shape that sits on the table and a shape that floats above it.

Spacing things as they recede

Once the box sits down, the next thing to go wrong is repeats. Fence posts, floor tiles, the slats of a bench, the windows along a terrace: evenly spaced in the world, crowding together as they travel back. Eyeballed, most people keep the first few too even, then panic and jam the last six into a centimetre.

Two constructions cover nearly all of it, and neither needs a grid. To halve any plane in perspective, cross its diagonals. The point where they meet is the centre of that plane in space, and it is not the centre by ruler on your page: it sits further back. That is how you find the ridge of a gable, the middle of a panelled door, the centre line of a table.

To repeat a module, place the first two by eye. Then draw a line from the top of the first post through the midpoint of the second (you can mark that midpoint by eye, since a vertical is not foreshortened) and carry it down until it meets the bottom rail. The crossing is the base of the third post. Run the same line from the second post through the midpoint of the third and you get the fourth. The spacing tightens on its own, at the right rate, with no guessing.

None of this is any use on a coffee mug. It matters the first time you draw a bookshelf, a keyboard, a tiled floor or a run of railings.

Ellipses, where it falls apart

Boxes are where perspective is taught. Circles are where it is failed. Cups, bottles, wheels, tins, plates and lamp shades are all cylinders and cones, and a cylinder is two ellipses and two lines. Get the ellipses wrong and no amount of shading will rescue the drawing.

Ellipses follow a small set of rules, and they are worth knowing by heart rather than by feel.

The minor axis runs along the axis of the cylinder. An ellipse has a long axis and a short one. The short one, the minor axis, always lines up with the central axle of the form. A mug standing on a table has a vertical axis, so the minor axis of its rim is vertical and the long axis is dead horizontal, at right angles to it. Tip the mug towards you and the whole ellipse rotates with it, minor axis still following the axle. This one rule fixes more bad cup drawings than anything else. On a bicycle wheel the axle is horizontal, so the ellipse tips on its side and its minor axis follows the hub, whichever way the bike is turned.

Ellipses widen the further they sit from eye level. A circle exactly at your eye level, seen edge on, is a straight line. Drop it below your eye and it opens. Drop it further and it opens more. So on a tall glass the rim, closer to your eye level, is a narrow ellipse, and the base, sitting further below, is noticeably fatter. Beginners draw the two the same width, or reverse them. Compare the opening of a wine glass with its foot: the same circle in plan, quite different shapes on the page.

An ellipse is symmetrical and has no corners. The far half of a mug rim is not flatter than the near half. The curve is identical top to bottom and left to right. If the back of your rim is squashed you have drawn an egg, and the cup will look like it is melting. The ends of the long axis are rounded, never pointed, and points are a symptom of drawing slowly in short strokes from the wrist. Move from the elbow, ghost the shape in the air twice, then commit in one light pass. Two or three loose overlapping passes read better than a single careful lumpy line, which is as much a line work problem as a perspective one.

Foreshortening: draw the shape you see

Hold a pencil sideways and it is long. Rotate it until it points at your eye and it becomes a short stub with a large blunt end. Nothing about the pencil changed. That compression is foreshortening, and it applies to anything angled towards you: an outstretched arm, a table running away from you, the barrel of a watering can.

The difficulty is not optical, it is a conflict of information. You know the pencil is eighteen centimetres long, the knowledge overrides the evidence, and you draw the length you know. The drawing goes flat. It is the same failure as drawing the symbol of a mug instead of the mug.

Measuring is the crude fix and it works. Hold your pencil at arm's length with the elbow locked, line the tip up with one end of the foreshortened form and slide your thumb down to the other end. Without changing your grip, compare that length against something you have already drawn correctly, usually the object's own width. The answer often comes out at one and a quarter widths when you were about to draw three.

The better fix is to stop naming the thing. A heavily foreshortened shoe is not a shoe, it is an odd blob with a dark gap under it. Draw the negative shapes, the gaps between and around the form, because you hold no prior beliefs about the shape of a gap. This is the quickest way into observational drawing. An umbrella pointed towards you and a watering can with its spout coming forwards are good practice, and both are already in your house.

What to practise this week

Do these in a cheap sketchbook and throw the results away. None of them is a drawing.

  1. A room corner in two point. 20 minutes. Sit facing the corner of a room so that two walls run away from you. Mark your eye level across the page first, then draw the vertical line of the corner. Now the skirting boards: one runs off to the left and rises towards your eye level, the other runs off to the right and rises towards it too. The ceiling lines do the same in reverse, dropping towards eye level as they go. Add a door and stop.
  2. One book, three rotations. 15 minutes. A hardback flat on the table, well below your eye level. Draw it square on, near edge parallel to the bottom of your page. Turn it thirty degrees and draw it again: now the corner nearest you sits lowest on the page and both top edges rise as they recede. Turn it once more until one long edge points almost straight at you, and draw what that does to the cover. Do not measure the third one, just look.
  3. A stack of cylinders. 20 minutes. Draw one vertical line down the page as the shared axis. Stack four cylinders on it like a tower of tins, every ellipse with its minor axis on that line, each one widening as it moves further from your eye level. Put your eye level a third of the way down the page so the top cylinders sit above it and the bottom ones below. The ellipse nearest eye level should be almost a slit. Twenty minutes of this does more for your cups than a week of drawing cups.

You do not need to build grids

Full perspective construction, with taped-down horizon lines and vanishing points pinned to the wall beyond the paper, is a tool for architects, comic artists and anyone inventing a space that does not exist. It is a real craft, and it is not what you need in order to draw a teapot on your kitchen table. Beginner construction drawings tend to come out stiff, all ruler and no looking.

What you want instead is the instinct, plus a way to check it. Two habits are enough. Before you commit a line, ask where your eye level sits relative to the object, because the answer decides the top face and every ellipse in the drawing. After the block-in, run a straightedge along your receding edges and see whether they agree with each other. A ten minute drawing checked that way teaches more than an hour of ruled construction, and perspective errors that cost nothing to fix in the first three minutes are unfixable once you have spent forty minutes rendering on top of them.

Perspective is not a topic you finish. It stops being a procedure and turns into something you notice, and then one day you draw the table edge at the right angle without deciding to. Getting there is a question of frequency rather than duration: fifteen minutes on a real object, checked with a ruler afterwards, will beat a weekend of grids.
